The stadium named after the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In addition to the main stadium, there is an indoor stadium having a capacity of over 8,000 people. Also, there is one Kabbadi field, two beach volleyball courts, one handball court, and one throw ball court. The authority also provided facilities for other sports like table tennis, boxing, weightlifting, chess, judo, and many more. Earlier, there were nine test cricket matches and the World Volleyball Grand Prix Tournament.

This place is built on the place of the old Madras Zoo that shifted to a different location. It created with a great cost of US$ 6.4 million in 1993. On the other hand, the indoor stadium gets renovated by the Government of Tamil Nadu for US$ 1.7 million. Also, the synthetic athletics track was upgraded by the same authority for US$ 4.8 million in 2013.
