He rocked the chartbusters in the decade of 1970 and 1980; his major hits were ‘Piano Man’, ‘Uptown Girl’ and ‘We Didn’t start the fire’. Early life
Billy Joel was born in The Bronx as William Martin Joel on May 9, 1949 and he grew up Levittown, New York. He was born to Howard and Rosalind Nyman. Not much known about his studies and academic career, Joel was deeply interested in music. He learnt piano from American Pianist Morton Estrin and musician Timothy Ford.
Career
Billy Joel started his career in year 1963, he joined band ‘The Echoes’ which was later named as ‘The lost souls’. In 1967, Joel joined ‘The Hassles’ band, they together released two albums titled ‘The Hassles’ and ‘Hour of the wolf’, they proved to be unsuccessful and didn’t gathered much attention. In 1969, he formed a band and named it ‘Atilla’. In 1971, Billy Joel signed recording contract with Artie Ripp’s Family Productions and released first album ‘Cold spring harbor’. His next hit was ‘Piano Man’ which became a smashing hit of all times. In 1973, he recorded the album ‘piano Man’ in Los Angeles with the Columbia Records. It later became his first top 20 single and first gold album. In 1978, he released his second album ‘52nd street’; it became greatest album of all times. In 1980, Billy Joel came up with ‘Glass House’, it went on top of Billboard chart. From1981 to 1983, Billy Joel came up with his live album ‘Songs in the attic’, ‘cold spring harbor’, ‘The innocent man’. From 1986 to 1993, he gave many solo hits like The bridge, Storm Front, River of dreams etc. In 1996, he released Greatest Hits Volume III. It included his two famous singles, ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ and ‘Hey Girl’. On February 4, 2007, he performed the national anthem at Super Bowl XLI. In the same year, Columbia Records released ‘All My Life’, which was his first new pop music since 1993. In 2011, his two albums were re-released by California Records namely, ‘Cold Spring Harbor’ and ‘Piano Man’.

Billy Joel has been married thrice in his life. His first wife was Elizabeth Weber Small, they married in year 1973, and the couple parted ways after 9 months of togetherness. Billy Joel again tied the knot in 1985; he married Christie Brinkley a supermodel. They together have a daughter named ‘Alexa Ray Joel’; they also divorced in year 1994.
On October 2, 2004, Billy Joel married American Cookbook author, Katie Lee, they split up in 2009.
All his life Billy Joel faced depression issues. Once he drank furniture polish and left a suicidal note. He also battled alcohol related problems and went to rehabs many times.
