Early life
Phil Knight was born as Philip Hampson Knight on February 24, 1938 in Portland, Oregon. His father William W. Knight was a lawyer and later on he became newspaper publisher and his mother Lota was a home maker. Knight went on to attend ‘Cleveland High School’ in Portland and later on he was enrolled to ‘University of Oregon’, he was graduated in year 1959 and earned journalism degree. He also attended ‘Graduate School of Business’ at Stanford University, he was graduated with a MBA degree in year 1962.
Career
Phil Knight, was very much interested in starting a business of running shoes, after completing his education, he also visited Japan in year 1962 to discover high quality shoes, he was impressed with Tiger brand running shoes, which were manufactured by Onitsuka Co., Knight immediately made a contract with the company. In year 1971, Phil Knight and his friend Bowerman started his own company ‘Nike’. Phill Knight was a former athlete aspired to design products that the world’s top athletes would like to use. He made acquaintances with Olympic track athletes, such as the long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine, hoping he would influence others to try his products. Nike’s model of shoe, the Cortez, debuted at the 1972 Olympic trials and proved to be highly profitable. In 1990s, Nike expanded its business and stepped out into hockey, golf, and soccer apparel. Their expansion strategy proves to be successful. Knight resigned as the CEO of Nike in November 2004 and continued as the chairman of the board.

Phil Knight is a married man; he is married to a woman named Penelope Penny Sparks. The couple together has four children, one of theirs son died in diving accident in year 2004.
