Early life
Ma Huateng was born on October 29, 1971 in Badagang, Dongfang County, Guangdong. Ma Huateng was enrolled in Shenzhen University in 1989 and did Bachelors of Science degree in computer science in 1993. After completing his studies, Ma Huateng worked at various companies like China Motion Telecom Development Ltd. and Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd.
Career
Ma Huateng has founded ‘Tencent Inc.’ in 1998 along with his 4 friends. During startup years, Ma faced many difficulties to make the company successful venture. He took up various roles ranging from janitor to website designer, in order to keep the company afloat. Tencent offered e-mail and internet paging services initially. In year 1999, Tencent launched its internet messaging service called QQ , to grab major market share. Tencent has also offered many services like cellular phones. In 2004, Tencent became the largest instant messaging service in China, in same year Tencent also added gaming feature to its services. This lead to increase 1 million subscribers online in China and also in June 2004 the firm raised nearly $200 million when it went public on the Hong Kongstock exchange. The Company under Ma’s leadership and guidance kept on improving and made its base in international market.
It also entered into a partnership with Google, but it was not successful. Tencent’s mobile messaging application, WeChat, had more than 200 million active users in 2012.
