Iris Fontbona is 76-77 years old Chilean businesswoman who is well known for inheriting the Luksic Group which includes the Antofagasta PLC, Minera Michilla, Minera El Tesoro and Minera Los Pelambres after her husband’s death in 2005 thus making her fortune in beverages, mining and many other industries. She is now one of the richest and powerful persons in Chile, 66th wealthiest person in the world and 5th wealthiest in Latin America showing ultimate power of woman at its best.
Early Life
Iris was born in year 1942/1943 as Iris Balbina Fontbona Gonzalez. She was raised in her hometown attending Catholic High School. She keeps her true faith in god as devout Roman Catholic.
Career
She started her career by becoming the in-charge of Antofagasta PLC, one of the biggest copper mining corporations in the world after her husband’s death in 2005. The company at present operates 4 copper mines at Esperanza, Tesoro, Michilla and Pelambres with mineral exploration projects being carried out in Chile and Peru. She also became head of the Luksic
Group with majority stakes in Quinenco, a consumer packaging and beverage maker. Aside from all this she also showed interest in Banco de Chile, Madeco as well as businesses in energy, transportation and port services. She with her sons even own two hotel chains of Croatia; Laguna Porec and Adriatic Luxury Resorts.
The company under her control is operational in various sectors of Chilean economy, with equity participation in Aguas Antofagasta of Chile, Antofagasta Minerals, rail roads to Bolivia from Antofagasta, Tethian of Australia and several other investments across the globe. Based on market capitalization, the company holds 33rd position in the London Stock Exchange and even constitutes FTSE 100 Index. The group now is considered to be the largest seller of brewer in the world, second biggest bank in the country of Chile, largest copper mines and shipping company.
Personal Life
She got married to Andronico Luksic Abaroa at age 18. After marriage she became step-mother of five children from his first wife and also gave birth to three of her own children; Andronico Luksic Craig, Guillermo Luksic and Jean Paul Luksic. At present she resides in Santiago, Chile.
