How they got started?
The company started its journey in 1958 as shoe mart by Henry Sy, Sr. in Manila. This store gradually turned out to be profit for Henry and he planned to open up a departmental store further shifting its name from shoe mart to SM. The store then managed to get the supermarket title finally opening out its first such store in Quezon City called SM City North EDSA in 1985.
We can now consider them to be the dominant player in the mall business with over 8 million square meters of gross floor area across the country. They are well known for presenting out world-class destination malls and giving customers a unique experience. Among their available premium malls three of them are at the top in Metro Manila’s tourism and trade hot spots- SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City, SM North EDSA in Quezon City and SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
What makes them special?
The malls have the title of being the largest in the country and that anchors the company’s operations in the region whereas aside from its size they have put forth the efforts in utilization of green technology to support environmental sustainability. Even work on the township planning and towards better community growth with providing facilities for persons with disability and special needs.
Calculating on their speciality we can never forget what they got on the list by serving first the Filipinos with the Olympic-sized ice skating rink and the world’s largest IMAX screens with the height of an eight-storey building.
In the end, we can say they have changed the way of shopping for the Filipinos with continuous growth in size, sophistication, concepts and environmental sustainability and also as a major source of employment in the county providing economic mobility opportunities for its citizens.
