History


Ranger Rick is the oldest and largest children’s nature magazine. It was named after Ranger Rick, a raccoon protagonist who was first portrayed extinguishing a forest fire within the first issue.

In 1967, the National Wildlife Federation first published the first model of the magazine as Ranger Rick’s Nature Magazine.

Ever since readers have continued to pass on their interests to their children.

The magazine also started publishing two companion magazines, Ranger Rick Jr. which mainly aims children aged between 4 to 7 years and Ranger Rick Cub, which aims children aged between 0 to 4 years old.


Printing Information


Being a nature magazine, Ranger Rick uses environmentally friendly processed papers, which are composed of consumer waste (about 30%) and are absent of chlorine. Instead of using normal ink, the magazine uses vegetable oils.

By using these environmentally friendly resources, they save up to 1,179 trees, 1,517,064 gallons of water, and 617,398 lbs of carbon and greenhouse gases and 216,093 lbs of solid wastes every month.

Ranger Rick has a circulation of about 525,000 and an estimated 200,000 more children exposed to the magazine by viewing pre-used copies. The limiting factor is that the magazine is published only 10 times a year.

In rolling down the pages of the Ranger Rick, there are lots of non-fiction articles about various environmental and animal topics, fictional story-like articles and color photography throughout the magazine.

Also included in the magazine are activities that get children to actively learn more about their environments, nature-themed games, jokes, and riddles.
