Ebony is considered among the world’s best-published lifestyle magazines in the African-American market. It’s an English monthly magazine that got started in Chicago, Illinois by John H. Johnson since 1945 under Johnson Publishing.

Its start
The magazine made its first start in 1945 when founded by John H. Johnson of Chicago.
He was a person who went for his first publishing venture, Negro Digest (1942) that was pocket-sized. Later, he founded Ebony and published its first issue on 1st November 1945.
The magazine in start initially highlighted the sport and entertainer American personalities but later shifted its focus upon all other sorts of black achievements. It made up to 1.8 million circulations in the 21st century finally reaching the top of success.
The magazine was such a success at that time that in 1972 the Magazine Publishers Association selected Johnson as “Magazine Publisher of the Year”. Johnson also worked for another magazine named Jet with highly emphasizing news and entertainment.

The magazine completing its 71 years in 2016 got sold to Clear View Group, a private equity firm and will be known by the name Ebony Media Operations, LLC.
