It’s not just a news magazine but it’s like a movement for black Americans showing and presenting out community culture with hot and trendy topics. They serve the point analysis and original reporting with a broad spectrum of daily thoughts and opinions on the national level.

Its start

The magazine made its first start in 1945 when founded by John H. Johnson of Chicago.

He was a person who went for his first publishing venture, Negro Digest (1942) that was pocket-sized. Later, he founded Ebony and published its first issue on 1st November 1945.

The magazine in start initially highlighted the sport and entertainer American personalities but later shifted its focus upon all other sorts of black achievements. It made up to 1.8 million circulations in the 21st century finally reaching the top of success.

The magazine was such a success at that time that in 1972 the Magazine Publishers Association selected Johnson as “Magazine Publisher of the Year”. Johnson also worked for another magazine named Jet with highly emphasizing news and entertainment.

What it contains?

It contents about black history, entertainment, business, health, occupations, personalities and sports.

Mostly the favour is given to black community inspiring an appreciation of black heritage and commemorates encouraging African-American contribution to American society.

Not only in printed form, but it also adds presence on the internet with the community-powered site on hot topics and advice, critical conversation, entertainment and breaking news about social black life in America.

For an online audience, it captures laugh-out-loud humor provoking and inspiring dialogue connecting all points of the African-American world. The sister site is also available by address www.jetmag.com.

Ebony also adds a list each year with “100 Most Influential Blacks in America” adding a star to its success.

They have made a cover recreation for many historic and iconic covers sealing out the moments in the time-epitomized photographs featured in Ebony collection since 1945. They have the main motive to share these legendary threads of history with the world.

What’s new?

The magazine completing its 71 years in 2016 got sold to Clear View Group, a private equity firm and will be known by the name Ebony Media Operations, LLC.

According to a recent report, it has sold out 1.3 million copies as total circulation all around the world in 2017.
It is, in short, the heart, the soul and the pulse of Black America.

Wow - now I see, that I’m not the only one, having trouble getting through to "somebody", "anybody", any live person, which can answer a telephone. Sept. 1, 2016 - how truly unfortunate. "Ebony" has been a Chicago icon, for years, & now somebody, is letting it go down the crapper - why? If you don't want it - don't let it sink, I’ll by the company! To own, run, primarily for the black communities that started in Chicago, & then went national. & now, there nobody to answer the phone. Look at all these complaints you got here of "fraudulent subscriptions, ignoring your customers, etc. What a "disgrace - the first periodical, intended to show black Americans, what other black Americans, in this country were doing, with the intention to try to elevate, the self - esteem, & lives of American blacks - now it's just a "has been".. Not if you sell it to me - I’ll bring it back to rank as the "second greatest", after Muhammad Ali. Please Feel free to contact me at 865 - 233 - 0116 - Chicago - south side, born & raised.

I must say… I am very surprised and disappointed in Ebony Magazine. You basically do not have a customer service department… no one answers the 800 # and the 212.397.4500 number is a complete waste of time to even call… there’s no way to connect to anyone if you do not have an ext…. I am contacting you on behalf of my 85 year old Auntie… Ebony Magazine took her money for a subscription and only sent her one magazine since January 2016… it is now May 2016. If you CARE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE please reach out to me at bromichele@aol.com.

Dear Ebony Magazine,

I am absolutely appalled by your customer service or lack thereof. I reported to your company back in November that we had not received any of our subscriptions we made a year in advance for. Once I notified your support staff, they promptly submitted a request for the magazines to be send out to our address. We received two of them (August and September), and again have stopped receiving our issues to your magazine.

This type of behavior is very disturbing, especially when I read a plethora of comments online about how your company rips its patrons off by not sending their magazine subscriptions to them. I need to receive the backlog of magazines your company is holding on to, and the current issues being released as well. My account still says the current issue is November. And we haven't even received that issue either. This is very disappointing.

If we do not have this situation resolved, unfortunately, we will report you to the BBB (Better Business Bureau). This type of behavior is unacceptable, and we don't have any choice at this point

They were also to add the addition of Jet to Ebony since it is no longer in print. My original of Ebony had not expired & don't like paying for item & not receive. No, it is not the P.O. U are not sending me my books. Please correct & how are you determining who get their books? I was told their were printing issues. I don't care. I paid & I want my books & not a book every 3 or 4 Months. I did not receive a book for 1- 2016 or 2- 2016. Here are the dates for 2015. 11- 2015 10 -2015 10-15. 9 -2015 7- 2015 6 -2015. I have tried to contact you on several occasions but no answer. I have been sick on & off since 2014 so all I could do was try to call, which I shouldn't have to do. I want & hope you correct this. This is horrible what you are doing with me. If need please call me as it will be much appreciated. No P.O problems & have not moved. This is against the Law what you are doing. You didn't even send Notices.

I have been dealing with this situation since October. Every month since then I have had to request my magazine. I did not receive my December issue and I probably won’t receive January as well.
I provided you with my subscriptions information and I should receive issues until 2017.

It is very inconvenient that I should have to do this every month. I have asked to be contacted by ANYBODY to help resolve this matter and I have not gotten any type of response via email or mail. ONCE AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST MY EBONY ISSUE FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER AS WELL AS JANUARY SINCE THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH AND I HAVEN’T RECEIVED MY ISSUE FOR THIS MONTH EITHER. IT WOUDL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I paid for a subscription to this magazine in 10/15. As of today which is 01/15/16 I have not received a copy or issue of the magazine! I paid in good faith trusting and believing that I would receive the magazine. I would greatly appreciate your attention in this matter since this is the second time I have notified you about this situation ! Please rectify this in a timely manner!!

I am a subscriber of Ebony Magazine. I renewed my subscription, and also a change of address. The last magazine I received was in September, they were coming late, but I have not received it at all, it's now November. I enjoy supporting the Ebony Magazine. I am not very happy with the company right now. I would appreciate if someone could look into why I haven't received any magazine for the last several months. Thank you

I have received two issues of EBONY magazine. I did not sign-up for this at all and I want to find out who signed me up. I have left a voicemail and previously I left several email messages but never was contacted back about this. Please email me back and let me know who signed me up for this and I also would like this canceled. I do not want to receive anymore issues.

Thank you,
Ashley

I am a subscriber of Ebony Magazine for several years and never had a problem with the delivery. Lately the magazine is coming in late, it is July 29 and I have not received the magazine this month. This has been going on for several months now coming in late.
I would appreciate it if you could look into this.

Thank you,

Emilienne Peterson
