Grameen Phone Bangladesh works as a joint venture between Grameen Telecom Corporation and Telenor since 1997.
With 74 million subscribers they are serving in Bangladesh as mobile telecommunication provider covering almost 99% of the country. Michael Foley is the CEO of the company with 2,412 employees.
In 2018, the company generated a revenue of 132.8 billion by accumulating net income of 35.2 billion.
When was it introduced in Bangladesh?
Grameen Phone was the initiative of Iqbal Qadir who planned to work with the Norwegian telephone company, Telenor to establish a universal mobile network in the country.
He got his first investment from a New York-based philanthropist, Joshua Mailman. In 1996, the company got licensed to perform and establish a cellular network in the area.
Soon this initiative came operational on the Independence Day of Bangladesh on 26th March 1997. The company witnessed the success rate by becoming the first-ever one to reach million, ten million and fifty million subscribers
in the country.
In November 2009, they got listed on both the stock exchange of Dhaka and Chittagong. At present, it is headquartered in GP HOUSE, Bashundhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Grameen Phone on 31st March 2017 announced its maximum shares 55.8% held by Telenor, while Grameen Telecom holds 34.2% shares and 10% were left for institutional investment and general retail.

On September 14th, 2019 Grameen Phone was asked to pay Tk 30 crore of fine by High Court for providing broadband internet services under Go Broadband.
The order was placed by the court to BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission to issue a fresh letter regarding the proceedings to Grameen Phone in four months.
