The the company came into existence in July 2003 by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He established the company with an initial investment of AED500 million as a second flag carrier of United Arab Emirates.

Airways Engineering, Hala Group, Etihad Airport Services, and Airline Equity Partners.
