Robert Kuok is a well-known Malaysian and Chinese business man and investor. He is the owner of Kuok Group, which is in many ventures like oil, mining, hotels, publishing and animal feed businesses and etc. According to Forbes, he is the richest man of Malaysia. He also owns a majority stake in Wilmar International, which is the largest pal oil trading company.
Early life
Robert Kuok was born on October 6, 1923 in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. He was the youngest kid of his parents. Robert Kuok completed his education from Raffles Institution and English College JohoreBahru. He soon started working to earn, he did small chores as office clerk in rice trading department in Singaporefor almost three years and later sat up small business with relatives help.
Career
Robert Kuok, soon after his stint at rice department store, he started his own business and founded Malaysian Sugar manufacturing company. It went on to become a monopoly in sugar production space of Malaysia producing 80% of Malaysia’s sugar and 10% of world’s sugar. This how he
got the nick name ‘the sugar king of Asia’. He started a chain of hotels, the famous ‘Shangri-la’ which is now spread out through the world. He has his business expanded hugely all over the world and in every Asian country like Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Recently in May 2018, Kuok was appointed to the Council of Eminent Persons along with Tun DaimZainuddin, Tan Sri Datuk Seri ZetiAkhtar Aziz, Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Merican and Jomo Kwame Sundaram.
Personal Life
Robert Kuok has been married twice in his life; his first wife was Joyce Cheah and second time he tied wedding knot with Ho Poh Lin. From both os his marriage he has total of eight children.
Robert Kuok’s son Kuok Khoonean is managing most of his business today.
Presently, Kuok is residing in Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong.
