In the business of publication since 1930

The publication business of Rodale Books came in 1930 as Rodale Inc. by the contribution of J.I. Rodale. Originally, the company got started as Rodale Manufacturing by J.I. Rodale and his brother Joseph who use to produce electrical connectors.

The ways parted away and Joseph took the manufacturing company to Pennsylvania working on local taxes whereas J.I. Rodale focused on publication.

J.I. came up with his first work on Organic Farming and Gardening magazine in 1942 which came out to be the best-read gardening magazine in the present world. He became the early advocate of organic farming and sustainable agriculture in the United States with the magazine.

He next presented his health and wellness magazine under title Prevention in 1950 and also worked on topics, including The Synonym Finder.
J.I. Rodale died of a fatal heart attack on a segment of The Dick Cavett Show as a guest in 1971.

The business was taken over by his son Robert Rodale on the global level but he also died in an accident in 1990. Later on, it was handled by Robert's wife Ardath Rodale and his daughter Maria Rodale.

After being long served by Rodale's family the publication was acquired by New-York-based Hearst Communications in 2017.

The Hearst communications sold off Rodale's trade publishing house to Crown Publishing Group and part of it to Penguin Random House. It is now headquartered in Emmaus, Pennsylvania and has a satellite office in New York City.
