The company was established on 12th June 1972 as Chicken on the Run with a single location in Arabi, Louisiana by Al Copeland. They start franchising their restaurants in 1976 and opened more than 500 locations in next 10 years. The present name of the company is inspired by the fictional detective Jimmy Popeye Doyle.
