The company was started by an optometrist, Stanley Pearle in Savannah, Georgia in 1961.

In 1985, Grand Metropolitan undertook the company and expanded it to 1,000 locations but soon it was acquired by Cole National Corporation in 1996 which was also operating the other optical departmental stores in the country.
