It is 166 years old American daily newspaper working under the ownership of The New York Times Company. The newspaper has a worldwide influence with its base in New York City since 1851. The circulation of paper is at top list in the world further getting ranked at 17th position.

When it got started?
The newspaper came into existence in 1851 with a cost of just a penny by journalist Henry Jarvis Raymond and former banker George Jones. The editorial work was totally done in an objective fashion which gave them an early success. The work was focused on cultured intellectual readership. It was 1896 when Adolph Simon Ochs joined the paper bringing back the real touch to it after the paper suffered from a loss of $1000 a week.
The paper never looked back after that and gained the reputation of international respected daily. Some initial changes in the way of reporting news of the day, eliminating fiction, adding a Sunday magazine section and reducing the price brought back the trust among users.
In 1912, the news coverage about the sinking of Titanic greatly enhanced its prestige. Even coverage of two world wars also put forth the importance of it in market.
Were they in controversies?
Yes, they were looked upon for reporting on “Pentagon Papers” in 1971 which shared out some news on secret involvement of U.S. in the Vietnam War. This work gave them the 1972 Pulitzer Prize. Since then it has achieved over 120 Pulitzers for its works in news field.
