Jaisalmer Fort Rajasthan Overview

It is an historical landmark which is situated in Indian state of Rajasthan. The fort accommodates almost one-fourth of the old city’s population thus being famous as living fort in the world with a history of 800 years. Further the population as per growth settled down on the outer area of fort walls since 17th century.

When was it built?

A Bhati Rajput, Rawal Jaisal built such a beautiful and historical landmark in around 1156 CE. It has a vast and interesting story about its builder who faced out eight to nine year siege by Sultan Alauddin Khalji, who after facing raid on his treasure caravan by the Bhati decided to rule the area. The male warriors were defeated in the battle whereas the Rajput women are still remembered for sacrificing their lives in ‘Jauhar’. The fort was left abandoned after that and later was occupied by the remaining Bhati Rajputs. In 1530-1551 CE it was under the Rawal Lunakaran’s reign which later went to Mughals remaining under them till 1762. Maharawal Mulraj and his son Gaj Singh inherited the fort
 
 
during East India Company rule but were not able to build the area in economic development. Now the town earns the revenue from the tourism.

Why is it so famous?

Looking upon its importance then it is known for its defensive architecture which basically includes the length of 1,500 ft and the width of 750 ft plus an advantage of being built on hill. It includes four entrances or gates connected with the township whereas also have 99 bastions that form the inner wall defensive perimeter of 2.5 mi long. Locally it is called as Sonar Quila as one of the largest forts in the world and also for the reason of fading to honey-gold as the sun sets thereby camouflaging the fort in the Yellow Desert.
The other main attractions include the Raj Mahal palace and 7 Jain temples built from yellow sandstones during 12th -16th century. There are various Havelis or large houses known for the ornate sandstone carvings which are still in existence as museum or residence of the renowned wealthy Rajputs of the area. Beside these there are splendid structures Maharawals located in front of Chauhata Square. The Jawahar Palace and the Laxmikanth Temples are other tourist attraction places.

Is it at risk now?

Yes, the growing population of the area has prone some risks to its development due to inadequate civic amenities, derelict houses and many other things. Also the seepage pose a great threat to the fort as it is built on weak sedimentary rock. Many buildings in the fort have collapsed and thus world is offering out restoration fund to maintain its existence. In 2013, it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
