Dairy Queen Overview
It is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and is well known for soft serve, ice cream, milkshakes, sundaes, hot dogs, fast food, French fries, salads, soft drinks, chicken and hamburgers in United States.
The company is headquartered in Edina, Minnesota, United States serving in 6,400 locations and generating the revenue of US$2 billion in the financial year of 2009 according to report. Currently it is active internationally with stores in over 30 countries.
When was it started?
It was in 1938 when John Fremont McCullough and his son, Alex decided to open an ice cream store which ran successfully selling out 1,600 servings in just two hours. From this he planned to open their first Dairy Queen store in Joliet, Illinois in 1940. They further expanded the business globally on franchise system and added much to their menu such as banana splits and dilly bars. In 1950s they came up with concept of hot food items and in this they have a vast menu of hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken strips.
The company also owns Orange Julius which is a
flavoured popcorn company started out of Wyoming. They have their largest locations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Why is it so popular?
From decades upon decades, Dairy Queen is there in the summertime with ice creams having the signature curl on its top and burgers. They are among the list of chains that are simply impossible to dislike as they not only put the soft-serve ice cream but also the legendary Blizzard on the map with treats on special occasions. The “Treat Centers” are primarily found in food courts and sell frozen treats along with Orange Julius. The popularity of the company can be ranked from its journey which shows its expansion from 100 stores in 1947 to 1,446 in 1950 and almost 2,600 in 1955.
Interesting facts
Record was broken for a new World’s largest Blizzard Treat in June 2005 in Springfield, Mass weighing 8,224.85 pounds and was 22 feet tall.
