About Vagit Alekperov
Vagit Alekperov is 68 years old Russian and Azerbaijani business tycoon in the field of oil industry. He heads as the president of LUKOIL, a Russian multinational energy corporation since 1991 in Moscow, Russia. The company revenue in the financial year of 2017 counts around $102 billion heading the title of being the largest global producer of crude oil and the second largest company in Russia.
Vagit was born on 1st September, 1950 in Baku, Azerbaijan, SSR, USSR as Vagit Yusufovich Alekperov with Azerbaijani nationality. His father was a worker in oilfield who died when he was very young. He was very much influenced by his father who used to teach him to follow up on his footsteps. He attended Azerbaijan Oil and Chemistry Institute to complete his graduation in 1974 followed by his first job in the industry at age 18. He also worked in Kaspmorneft as a drilling operator.
Vagit started his career in age 18 when he got his first job in industry followed by his further job at Kaspmorneft, a production company where he
was appointed as drilling operator later getting positioned as deputy head. In 1979, he decided to move to Western Siberia to work for Surgutneftegaz till 1985 and gain the work experience. His efforts made him the deputy general director of Bashneft, a production company followed by being the general director of Kogalymneftegaz. The real change came when he was appointed as the youngest deputy energy minister in Soviet history and he decided to bring a revolutionary change by establishing a vertically integrated state-owned energy company, Langepas-Uray-Kogalymneft, in 1991 as subsidiary of Ministry of Fuel and Energy. Soon he was made president of the corporation in 1993 raising the status of company as second oil companies only after ExxonMobil with reserves. In 2000, they acquired Getty Petroleum Marketing followed by IFD Kapital Group. He is at present the sixth richest person in Russia and the 74th richest person in the world according to Forbes magazine.
He has been awarded with Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, Order of Friendship, Order of the Badge of Honour, Order of the Crown, Order Of The Madar Horseman, Shohrat Order and many more.
He got married to Larisa Victorovna Alekperova and is father of a son named Yusuf.
It is estimated to be around US$23.0 billion as on January 2019.
