Tony Blair is a British Politician, British Labour Party leader who served as Prime Minister of United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007. He is the longest labour serving prime minister and the second youngest prime minister since 1812. In 1997 he left his position as the leader of Labour party and sworn as prime minister. He has brought many reforms and major changes to Labour party. He retired from the job of Prime minister in 2007 and handling it over to Gordon Brown in June 2007. During his tenure as prime minister he implemented social reforms to eradicate poverty and unemployment. He has also shown great concern for environmental depleting hazards, such as global warming etc. Tony Blair faced a lot of criticism and backlash for supporting America in invading Iraq. His party member and general public was against &enraged his decisions of involving England in wars.

Early life

Anthony Charles Lynton Blair was born on May 6, 1953 to his parents Leo and Hazel Blair in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was a tax inspector & and a famous attorney and ran for the parliament. Blair has two siblings, a younger sister and an older brother. He was raised in Durham, England and attended “Chorister School” from 1961 to 1966. He attended “Fettes College” in Edinburgh from 1961 to 1966. After college and at 18 years of age Blair tried his hands on finding fame as rock music promoter, his inspiration was great musician Mick Jagger. In 1972, Blair was 19 years old; he joined St John’s College, Oxford to pursue Law degree. During his days at Oxford, he started taking interests in political aspects; he was majorly affected by a fellow college mate Peter Thomson. His time there at Oxford was his stepping stone towards Politics.

Career


Tony Blair came into politics by joining Labour Party back in 1982. He was given opportunity to represent the party in parliament in 1982 for Beaconsfield District. He lost election in 1982 and stood again in 1983 and won this time and earned a seat in parliament representing Sedgefield District. 1984 he was promoted as Treasury spokesman because of his hard work and dedication towards his party. During his position as Treasury spokesman, his major work was opposing the Conservative government of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
In 1987 he was promoted to the position of spokesman of Trade & Industry, in year 1988, Blair got the position of Shadow secretary of energy. The role of Shadow Ministry is an alternative cabinet members from opposition, who criticizes and analyses the role & work performed by existing government. In 1992 Tony Blair was appointed as Shadow Home Secretary. After the sudden demise of John Smith from a cardiac arrest, the labour party leader of that time, Blair was elected as the new party leader. While during his tenure as Labour party leader, he brought several policies and reforms in areas of taxation, education, promoting trade and combating crime.

On May 2, 1997, Tony Blair sworn as the Prime Minister of United Kingdom, he achieved victory by majority of votes. In his tenure of Prime Minister, he introduced major reforms in area of taxation, wages, and employment, rights for homosexuals, health & educational areas. He also took steps to bring poverty and unemployment down. He also addressed global warming issues. During his tenure, Blair also faced criticism for engaging U.K in invading Iraq for U.S. U.K was part of wars and battles during Blair’s tenure. His involvement in Northern Ireland Peace process gathered him lot of praise and appreciation. He was re-elected as the prime minister in 2001 by winning in general elections. In 2007, he was forced to resign and handed his leadership to Gordon Brown. Post to his retirement he did many noticeable and charitable works.

Tony Blair married Cherie Blair on March 29, 1980. His wife is also a Lawyer. Tony & Cherie from their marriage together have four children, Euan Blair (Jan 19, 1984), Nicholas (Dec 6, 1985), Kathyrn (March 2, 1988) and Leo (May 20, 2000). Tony Blair has a great belief in Christianity and follows it deeply. He is catholic. In May 2018, Tony Blair faith foundation has been launched for promoting, respecting and joining different faiths together.
