Thomas Petterfy is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is fondly called as ‘The father of high-speed trading’. He is best known as the Chief executive officer of Interactive brokers group. He has also founded Boston Options Exchange which is a TMX group operated automated exchange company.
Early life
Thomas Petterfy was born in Budapest, Hungary in September 1944. He was born to Hungarian parents. His parents divorced early and his father remarried some other woman, who was the first cousin of his birth mother and became second mom of Thomas, unable to accommodate his son, his father gave Thomas 100 dollars and asked him to leave the place. Talking about his formal qualification, Petterfy did bachelor’s degree from the Clark University although he also started engineering, but left it midway.
Career
Thomas Petterfy started his career as an architectural draftsman in United States. He started out as designer software, but left it in between when he bought a seat on the American stock exchange to trade equity options. He made
a major change by introducing handheld computers onto the trading floors in early 1980’s. He founded his first company T.P. & Co in 1978 and his second venture was Timber Hill Inc., in 1982. In 2001, he named Timer Hill Group to Interactive Brokers Group LLC. The company’s headquarters is now located in Greenwich, now logs in over one million trades per day.
Personal Life
Thomas Petterfy has been married twice and both the times he eventually didn’t find an ideal mate and headed for divorce. From his first marriage, Thomas had three children, which he chose to keep away from limelight.
At present, Thomas Petterfy is in relationship with a Socialite from Greenwich Lynn Wheat.
He is presently residing in Palm Beach, Florida, United States.
