Early Life
Matthew was born on 7th February, 1988 in Tampa, Florida to John and Margaret Stafford. He was raised in family as the eldest child with four siblings. The family used to live in Dunwoody, Georgia from where they moved to Dallas, Texas. He attended Highland Park High School where he got involved in playing football coached by Randy Allen. He soon turned into a renowned high school quarterback in the United States in the class of 2006. Later he joined University of Georgia and played for the college team. He received numerous accolades including being named as Parade All-America Team and the USA Today Pre-Season Super 25 in 2005. He also received MVP and Best Arm Award at the 2005 EA Sports Elite 11 Quarterback Camp and was named the 2005 EA Sports National Player of the Year.
Professional Career
He started his professional career in 2009 NFL Draft after he got selected in 1st overall pick by Detroit Lions giving him chance to be Lion’s permanent starting quarterback for 2009 season. He made his first start in NFL on 13th September, 2009 and won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week and Pepsi Rookie of the week. He got injured but soon made a comeback against Washington Redskins. Next he played against Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for his performance. In 2012, he became the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw 5,000 passing yards in 2011 season and the second-youngest quarterback to do so. He got the title of Pro Bowl alternate for NFC after 2011 season. In 2013, he signed a 3-year extension contract with the Lions for $53 million. Among his other achievements, he holds the 50- game record for completion at 1,214. He is also known for 300 yard passing performances through 50 games at the age of 19. Stafford is the first quarterback to complete 60% or more of his passes in all 16 games in NFL history. In 2016 season, he broke Peyton Manning’s NFL record of making the fourth-quarter comebacks in a season with 8. In 2017, he extended his contract further with Lions in $135 million deal further making him the highest paid player in NFL history.
