Early Life
Kendrick was born on 17th June, 1987 in Compton, California as Kendrick Lamar Duckworth to Kenny Duckworth. His family made a move from Compton to Chicago as his father was associated with the Gangster Disciples gang and this was directly influencing his family by the violence of the streets. He observed the precarious street activities remaining thoughtful and soft-spoken. He soon adopted the name K-Dot and started performing on his lyrics as a rapper. It was in 2003 his musical career started up at the age of 16 when he made a release of mixtape called Youngest Head Ninja in Charge.
In education, he attended McNair Elementary and Vanguard Learning Center in the Compton Unified School District and later went for Centennial High School.
Career
His career started up at the age of 16 with the release of mixtape titled Youngest Head Ninja in Charge. This brought him local fame and he secured a recording contract with Top Dawg Entertainment further releasing out two acclaimed mix tapes, Training Day (2005) and C4 (2009). In 2010, he went for releasing his fourth mix tape, Overly Dedicated, but this time under his own name and this was also the time when he caught attention of rap star, Dr. Dre who took him under his wing as mentor. He next got signed to independent record label, Aftermath Entertainment, bringing his career to next level of critical and commercial acclaim with 2012 released two albums, Good Kid and M.A.A.D City followed by the Grammy winning album, To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) and the Grammy and Pulitzer winning album, Damn (2017). He also remained active with tours and making guest appearances in albums of artists like YG, SZA, Tame Impala, Jay Rock, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Snoop Dogg and many more. He was named by Time magazine as one among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016 and in 2018 received Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album Damn (2017) that became the first non-classical and non-jazz album to be in the list of award.
