James Harris Simons was born on April 25, 1938 in Newton, Massachusetts, United States. He was born to Jewish parents Matthew and Marcia Simons. His father was the owner of Shoe factory. A brilliant student always, Simons was interested in mathematics from the very start. He studies at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1958.Later on he attended, Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his doctorate in 1961, at the age of twenty three.

James Harris Simons has founded the hedge fund management company, Renaissance Technologies, which is now a day’s one of the world's most successful hedge fund companies.
