About D Elgar

D Elgar or Dean Elgar is 32 years old South African left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He started his international career in 2012 playing an ODI match against England whereas on the other side his domestic career is with Titans at present. He is known for being the former Test captain of the national team.

Early Life

D Elgar was born on 11th June 1987 in Welkom, Orange Free State Province, South Africa as Dean Elgar to Sally and Richard Elgar. He attended St. Dominic’s College, Welkom to complete his studies. His early career came up with Free State club where he played an impressive inning receiving the South African Country Districts Player of the Year title in 2005. This success brought him the leading chance to go for the 2006 Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Career

He started his cricket career playing for domestic club Free State followed by his chance to lead the team in 2006 Under-19 World Cup. He pulled out his best with great innings but it took him nearly six years to come in proper form and impress national
 
 
selectors. He played well for Knights making a solid score in 2011 with first-class batting average touching 50 and to go for a warm-up match against Sri Lanka. In series, he was unfortunately got withdrawn citing injury but his following year appearance came in ODI match against England making his debut in Perth. He got chances to prove himself but ODI was not the right choice for his low strike rate and classical mold. Soon he was called upon for Test matches where he played great innings against Australia and New Zealand in 2013. This was also the time of Graeme Smith’s retirement and he made the best fit for the place in 2014.
He opened the innings against Sri Lanka scoring 103 and continued to play further against West Indies. Not only this, he holds a record list of being the first opener to carry his bat in a Test innings against England. He even holds the highest partnership with JP Duminy of 250 in Perth and is the only batsman to carry his bat twice in a single calendar year for an inning of a Test match. He was also chosen as Test captain in 2017 against England whereas in January 2019 got a chance to be a stand-in captain for the third Test against Pakistan after Faf de Plessis got suspended for slow over-rate.
