Social Profile Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Bronx girl from a Puerto Rican family, made history in New York on Tuesday by defeating Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley, a well-placed politician.
From the beginning, Ocasio-Cortez surprised everyone by coming to the primary elections that will
determine who will be the representative in Washington for the New York's 14th congressional district.
The Puerto Rican is part of a group of young women of color who are challenging the Democratic establishment, in this case a 56-year-old white man who had been in Congress since 1999.
Ocasio-Cortez belongs to the third generation of New Yorkers from a family from Puerto Rico. She studied at the Yorktown high school in the New York county of Westchester, from 2003 to 2007. She later graduated in Economics and International Relations from Boston University in 2011. After finishing college, she returned to the Bronx. Until last November she worked as a waitress.
Ocasio-Cortezes is a strong advocate for immigrant rights, universal Medicare, a federal guarantee of jobs and free college tuition. In addition, as part of the Democratic Socialists of America organization, she participated in the 2016 campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders.
The young Puerto Rican believes she managed to connect with voters because she believes that "many working-class Americans have been waiting for a clear advocate of economic, social and racial dignity in the United States. And we launched a direct, clear message, "said Ocasio-Cortez, in statements collected by the CBS network.
"Voters also know that I was the only candidate who had not received money from private companies at a time when economic marginalization is increasing in New York," the Puerto Rican candidate added.
"The stunning victory of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez over Joe Crowley in the 14th precinct of New York has been a reprimand for the political apparatus and centrism of the Democratic Party," said Alvin Tillery, associate professor of political science and director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy at Northwestern University.
Under the slogan 'The Courage to Change', Ocasio-Cortez demonstrates in the video her campaign that is a different candidate: a young Latina from the Bronx, as opposed to the white man from Queens, represented by her opponent Crowley.
