About its history
Michael Wood and Robert Lally are the founders of the company but its story starts a long back when Michael was facing trouble to teach his son how to read and put forth his search on phonics while continuing his job as an attorney at Cooley LLP. He managed to develop one such product in prototype with Texas instruments chips which later became the Leapfrog’s first starting product. In 1995, he founded the company with Robert Lally starting with initial funding of $800,000 from friends and soon the word spread grabbing attention of retailers such as
Walmart, Target and FAO Schwarz.
The company managed to expand in almost 10 countries by early 1997 and then choose to merge with Knowledge Universe to go for better results. Explore Technologies was later acquired by them in 1998 which led to development of product named LeapPad, a learning tablet. In 2002, it became public and is now up with range of products that are enhancing the capabilities of children of all ages. Recently, in April 2016 it was acquired by VTech in $72 million.
