Christchurch botanic gardens

In New Zealand, this botanic garden was built up to commemorate the solemnisation of the marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark after planting the English oak in 1863 in the central city of Christchurch.

About its origin and design

We can say the garden is the green heart of the city for over 150 years. It was founded in 1863 by planting an English oak tree. It was considered as a small beginning that gradually turned out to be the much-loved destination for visitors and Cantabrians. Here from past years the natural wetlands and sand dunes are transformed in to a cultivated 21 hectare park with more than 10 different gardens framed by expansive lawns and mature trees. The place shows the real beauty of nature if you are looking for any landscape visit. One if plans to enter from Rolleston Avenue, next to the Canterbury Museum, they will walk past annual bedding displays to the rose garden across the archery lawn. Collection of modern, colourful and fragrant roses makes this place considered to be like a heaven for nature lovers. Adjacent to rose garden is the New Zealand garden named differently as Garrick House, Cuningham House, Townend House and Foweraker House showing up all native species including everything from cacti and succulents to tropical orchids and carnivorous plants. They also highlight the New Zealand fern, alpine plants and the iconic silver fern.
