History
The newspaper company was founded on September 3, 1940, by Alicia Patterson and her husband, Harry Guggenheim. Its first publication was done in Hempstead.
The company for many years copied the design of Daily News of short stories and a lot of pictures before it was redesigned in the 1970s.
Patterson, the company's founder was fired when she worked as a writer at Daily News, owned by her father after she got the basic facts of a divorce wrong in a published report.
Patterson later died in 1963, leaving her husband, Harry to become the editor and publisher of the newspaper.
In 1977, after the competition for Long Island Press came to an end, the company launched a separate Queens edition followed by a New York City edition branded New York Newsday.
In June 2000, the Tribune Company merged with Times Mirror, partnering the New York City television station with the Newsday.

The newspaper company is owned by Patrick Dolan who is still its Chief Executive Officer. It is also led by a team that consists of Debbie Henley (Editor) and Debby Krenek (Publisher).
On July 29, 2008, Cablevision purchased the newspaper company for $650 million. In 2016, Cablevision together with Newsday and News 12 were purchased by a Netherlands-based international company, Altice.
The newspaper has its headquarters based in Melville, New York, Suffolk County in the US.
The company has a weekday circulation of approximately 377,500 readers. As of 2019, its total average circulation ranged at about 437, 000 on weekdays, 434,000 on Saturdays and 495,000 on Sundays.

Though the newspaper has a tabloid format, it is not known for being sensationalistic like other daily local tabloids like the New York Post and the New York Daily News.
In 2008, Newsday was ranked number 10 among the newspapers in the United States in terms of newspaper circulation.
